“Red wine from the Syrah variety grown and vinified by the Pieria Eratini winery. RATING: 93 / 100”
Dark red colour, no signs of ageing. Dense red fruit with aromas of dried plums, raisins, a little bit of leather, molasses, carob and chocolate that finally dominates especially with the increase in temperature. Add in barrel which tries to block all the preceding. Sweet mouthfeel, rich body, plenty of tannins that give it vigour and density, with the acidity taking a back seat to the sweetness of the alcohol. The finish is bittersweet and chocolatey.
A megalith.
Score 93/100 for a wine that is based on the pillars of alcohol and tannins. These give it sweetness, richness in the body and fill the mouth with flavour. As for its aromas, the excessive maturation of the grape has kept only the overripe aromas but also spices combined with wood aromas from the barrel. The fresh aromas, as well as those of the flowers, have of course been sacrificed on the altar of extreme maturation. A wine with chew and flesh to the point where the wine ceases to be a wine. In order for this to occur, its varietal roots have of course been lost. It could be a Cabernet Sauvignon instead of a Syrah or even more so a Merlot. Its tannins are plentiful but round and chewy, a word that denotes the illusion of a liquid that needs chewing to be removed. The answer to the question of whether more ageing is needed is that it is not necessary.
